                              Is Stainless Steel Magnetic? (Back to Top)
                              Many stainless steels can be magnetized. In general, 300 series stainless steels are nonmagnetic and cannot be magnetized. However, as 300 series stainless steels are cold worked (tempered - quarter hard, half hard, full hard), they can develop some degree of magnetism. The more severely it is cold worked, the higher degree of magnetism the material will have. Of the items offered on Sidecuts.com®, C1008/C1010 and 17-7PH® Condition "C" would be considered magnetic. 17-7PH® Annealed is not magnetic.

                              What does the "L" mean in 304L and 316L? (Back to Top)
                              The "L" in these grades means these are lower carbon (C) versions of the standard alloy. Often times, if an application calls for 304 or 316, 304L or 316L can be used interchangeably. An "L" grade is not less corrosion resistant than the standard grade; however, in applications that require welding, the "L" grade is often preferred because it may prevent weld corrosion. At Sidecuts.com®, alloy 316 / 316L is purchased to meet both the standard 316 alloy as well as the 316L alloy. Alloy 304L can be certified on the BMC Certificate of Test / Conformance to meet alloy 304.
